His unflinching geekiness during his introductory scene is what may makes the time period seem confusing. Stan, however, is an unabashed weirdo who isn't shy or pretentious about his interests. Kyle, played by Timothée Chalamet, in the movie Lady Bird is the perfect example of this kind of character, a teen who's trying a little too hard to be seen as unique. When we see the "vinyl kid" in modern coming-of-age entertainment, they're usually incredibly pretentious and trying way too hard to come across as deep and cool. However, Stanley's character is a bit different from the archetypes viewers might be used to. That's what makes his character endearing. In fact, at the very beginning of the show when the counselor gives protagonist Sydney a diary and asks her to "write down what she is feeling," Sydney scoffs and asks why she "can't just write on her phone.” In fact, cell phones are used throughout the series. However, outside of the old music, cars and clothes, they seem to have modern technology. The playlist is from the '80s, the characters listen to records and Stan is wearing an Enya shirt accompanied by a two-piece faded blue suit with shoulder pads. It might be easy to assume that I Am Not Okay With This is just another one of these TV shows set in an ambiguous time period. ![]()
